Angst & Exasperation or A&E

We decided to go over to Nelson airport a day early. This gave us plenty of time to clean the house, prep’ it for our return, have a nice evening (dinner and a movie) in Nelson and take our time doing a few things needed there before we depart for a month.

Cafe India was excellent, the new Jurassic Park movie less so. We got good gifts to take to the UK and generally relaxed.

The Nelson-Auckland flight was delayed, as was Auckland-Vancouver. The upside was very little time to kill in transit.

Today’s musical number was London Town by Noel Coward…we arrived at Heathrow on time at 11am and by 1pm we were in Islington having a pub light lunch at The York.

The hotel room.

A little window shopping, a couple of hours kip and we’re out into London’s buzzing Friday night life.

Upper Street.

A Moon for the Misbegotten was terrific, with Michael Shannon and Ruth Wilson. Written by Eugene O’ Neill as a sequel to his classic A Long Day’s Journey into Night, this Almeida Theatre production was sparse, but riveting. We were glad to have gone, but were certainly starting to feel tired.

And then it happened. The theatre is a ten minute walk from our hotel. Just 20 metres from home Sharon tripped on a kerbstone. Both ankles rolled and a hard smack on the ground. We immediately feared the worst.

Offending curb to the right.
So close to the hotel. Blury because Pete’s phone camera has broken!

Sharon couldn’t walk, but somehow we got up to the room and got a cuppa started. The knee cuts were easily cleaned and dressed, but both ankles were bad. A definite left side sprain and a possible right side fracture was our diagnosis.

This all put paid to the tiredness. More tea, the BBC, and we both pondered ‘what next’ without much talk.

If you’ve ever seen those hospital reality shows on TV, you will know that the one thing you don’t do is turn up at A&E late on a Friday night in the big city. As sure as we were of a fracture we decided to try and get some sleep and brace ourselves for A&E in the morning.

It’s was a mission getting out of the hotel and even worse getting in and out of the Uber. As we left the hotel a staff member told us it happens all the time on that bit of pavement. (FFS).

At 7am, still in the UK less than 24 hours, we presented ourselves at University College Hospital, Gower Place, London WC1.
